Money markets: interest rates, bills and bonds

The policy rate and the corridor around it, what banks charge each other overnight, Treasury bill, OMO and bond auctions, Nigeria's dollar bonds, and whether savings are beating inflation.

Where the CBN has set interest rates

Decisions of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Figures as at 3 Nov 2026. Next MPC meeting: 23–24 Nov 2026.

The interest rate corridor

Banks can borrow from the CBN overnight at the ceiling and deposit spare cash with it at the floor, so short-term market rates should stay between the two. When banks hold a lot of spare cash, rates sink to the floor.

Interbank rates are sitting at or near the floor, a sign that banks have more cash than they need. The CBN mops up the excess by selling OMO bills (see below).

Key terms

Money market words, in plain language

Monetary Policy Rate (MPR)The CBN's benchmark rate. It anchors what banks pay to borrow and, over time, lending and savings rates.
CorridorThe band around the MPR set by the CBN's lending rate (ceiling) and deposit rate (floor). Since September 2026 it runs from 3 points below the MPR to half a point above.
Cash reserve requirement (CRR)The share of deposits banks must keep at the CBN, earning nothing. A high CRR limits how much banks can lend.
Stop rateThe highest rate accepted at an auction. Successful bidders get the stop rate on bills and bonds sold that day.
OMO billsShort-term bills the CBN sells to take spare cash out of the banking system, which supports the naira and helps control inflation.
Open repo rate (OPR)The rate on overnight loans between banks backed by government securities.
YieldThe return on a bill or bond if held to maturity, as a rate a year. Prices and yields move in opposite directions.
EurobondA bond the government sells abroad in US dollars, paid back in dollars.
